Vacation Savings Calculator: How to Save for a Family Trip
Plug in your trip cost goal, months until the trip, current savings, monthly contribution, and any one-time income โ we'll show you whether you're on track and exactly how much per month or per week you need to hit the goal.
"How much should we save for vacation?" is the wrong question โ the right question is whether the savings rate you can sustain will hit the trip you actually want. This calculator works the math forward and backward at the same time. Forward: given your monthly contribution, what will you have saved by trip time? Backward: given the goal, what monthly (or weekly) number do you need to hit it? It tells you both, then nudges with practical advice if you're behind. Pure math, no fees, no email gate.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I save for a family vacation?โผ
Realistic averages, family of 4: $1,500โ$3,000 for a Gulf Coast or Outer Banks beach week. $4,000โ$8,000 for a 6โ7 night Disney World trip with on-site hotels. $5,000โ$10,000 for a 7-night Hawaii trip. $8,000โ$15,000 for a Mexico/Caribbean all-inclusive luxury week. The variance is mostly hotel tier and dining, not destination. Use those as starting goals and adjust for your trip style.
How far in advance should I start saving?โผ
The standard advice is 6โ12 months out, but the better question is how much per month you can sustain. A $5,000 trip is $416/month for 12 months, $833/month for 6 months, or $1,250/month for 4 months. Pick the timeline that lets you hit a monthly number you can actually save without disrupting other goals.
What's a realistic monthly vacation savings target?โผ
Most personal-finance writers recommend 5โ7% of take-home pay for travel + entertainment combined. For a household earning $80K/year (~$5K/month after tax), that's $250โ$350/month. Higher if you want bigger trips, lower if you have tighter budget priorities. Whatever the number, it should be auto-transferred to a separate account on payday so you donโt see it as spendable.
Where should I keep vacation savings?โผ
A high-yield savings account (HYSA) at an online bank โ not your checking, not a brokerage. The reason is friction: you want it accessible enough to add to easily but separated enough that you donโt accidentally spend it. As of late 2025, HYSAs from Marcus, Ally, Wealthfront, and similar pay around 4โ4.5% APY โ a $5,000 trip fund earns $200/year just sitting there.
What if I hit my savings goal early?โผ
Three options, in order of how Iโd rank them: (1) leave the surplus as a trip-day reserve โ covers surprise costs, lost luggage, and the spontaneous excursion or fancy dinner youโll inevitably want. (2) Extend the trip by an extra night or two โ the marginal cost of one more night at the same hotel is usually the cheapest part of any trip. (3) Bank it for the next trip and start earlier next time. Almost never: pull it back into general spending โ youโll regret losing the trip fund.
Should I use a credit card to "save" by earning points?โผ
Only if you can pay it off in full every month. Earning hotel or airline points on planned spending is the smartest part of family-vacation finance โ a $5,000/year card spend at 2% returns earns $100 in cashback or 50,000+ points. But carrying a balance at 20% APY destroys all of that. Set up auto-pay for the full statement balance and treat the card like a debit card with rewards on top.
