Use real-world MPG, not the EPA sticker. Most family vehicles run 5–15% below their EPA rating on highway trips with luggage and AC. Realistic ballparks: minivans (Pacifica/Odyssey/Sienna) ~22–26 MPG, mid-size SUVs (Highlander/Pilot) ~22–26, three-row SUVs (Suburban/Yukon) ~17–20, hybrids (Sienna Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid) ~32–38. If you genuinely don't know, plug in 22 MPG and you'll be close.

$25–$40 per person per day for a family of 4 driving across the US is realistic when you're mixing fast food, gas-station snacks, and one sit-down meal a day. $20/person/day is achievable if you bring a cooler with breakfast and lunch supplies. $50/person/day is closer to a vacation pace where every meal is a restaurant. The calculator defaults to $30 — adjust based on your style.

Depends on the route. East Coast and Midwest routes (I-95, I-90 PA Turnpike, I-80 OH Turnpike, NY Thruway, Florida Turnpike) can rack up $50–$150 in tolls one way. West Coast and most of the South are nearly toll-free. If your route avoids I-95 and the major Turnpikes, $20–$30 round-trip is a safe guess. If it goes through New York, New Jersey, or the I-95 corridor, plan for $80–$200.

Drive is cheaper for trips under ~600 miles each way for a family of 4. Past that, the gas + hotel-night + food math starts to converge with two days' worth of cheap flights. Fly is usually cheaper for any international trip and for trips over 1,000 miles each way once you factor in 2–3 hotel nights on the road. A reasonable family pace is ~500 miles per driving day. So 1,500 miles each way is about 3 nights on the road getting there and 3 nights coming back, plus however many nights at the destination. Stretch days (700+ miles) are technically possible but kids melt down after hour 8 in the car. Plan more, not fewer, hotel nights.
